“Elections in the DRC: The EU explores the security conditions before the deployment of observers”

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is hosting an exploratory mission from the European Union (EU) to discuss security conditions before the deployment of its election observers in December 2023. The EU delegation had a meeting with Vice – Prime Minister in charge of Defense to discuss the logistical, political and security conditions. The delegation also went to the National Assembly to ensure the same conditions for the deployment of their observers.

As pointed out by Vincent Ringenberg, head of the EU exploratory mission, the objective was to listen to the analysis of the Deputy Prime Minister on the East of the country so that their mission could cover as much as possible in terms of observers. The EU delegation will have to give its answer to the Congolese government in September this year.

Thus, this exploratory mission of the EU in the Democratic Republic of Congo is a strong signal of the interest of the European Union in the upcoming elections in this country. It is to be hoped that this mission will be successful and that the necessary security conditions will be met to allow the European observers to do their work calmly.
