Collapse of the building of the “La Merveille Omega” Institute in Bagira: a less heavy toll than expected
In the commune of Bagira, in Bukavu, a tragic collapse of the building of the Institute “La Merveille Omega” took place, initially causing the death of 10 people. However, new information points to a revised toll, with 4 dead and one injured.
The mayor of the municipality, Patience Bengehya, explained that all the people previously considered dead or missing were finally found alive. He added that the workers who were building the septic tank were able to escape just before the building collapsed. Unfortunately, among the victims are the prefect of the secondary school, the director of the primary school, the educational advisers and a teacher candidate in the middle of a job interview.
The mayor of Bagira commune attributed this incident to a construction defect caused by the presence of the septic tank inside the building. The school authorities of the South Kivu 1 educational province went to the scene of the tragedy to assess the situation.
