“West African countries: between dialogue and tensions, ECOWAS seeks a solution in Niger”

“West African countries are raising their voices but without giving up on dialogue”

In a recent article published by El Pais, entitled “West African countries raise their voices but without giving up dialogue”, the author highlights the ambiguous position of ECOWAS regarding the situation in Niger. While the regional organization has ordered the immediate activation of a military force to restore constitutional order, it also favors the search for a negotiated solution.

This contradictory approach raises questions, particularly from analysts and international powers, who fear the consequences of a chaotic conflict in the heart of the Sahel. The Guardian also points out that ECOWAS seems reluctant to engage in a war, in particular because of the practical difficulties and costs associated with military intervention, as well as the support displayed by Mali and Burkina Faso for the Nigerien junta.

Despite pressure, the Nigerien junta remains inflexible and has even threatened to kill deposed President Mohamed Bazoum in the event of external military intervention. This threat greatly worries the Western powers, who express their deep concern about the conditions of detention of President Bazoum, sequestered for more than two weeks in his private residence without access to drinking water, electricity and adequate food.

Meanwhile, Hawaii is ravaged by deadly fires. Once-paradise landscapes are now reduced to ashes, including the town of Lahaina on the island of Maui. Survivor accounts describe fiery tornadoes fueled by Hurricane Dora’s high winds. This tragedy claimed dozens of lives and many people are still missing.

Faced with this catastrophe, it is necessary to reflect on the power of climate change. If a place like Hawaii, renowned for its natural beauty, can be turned into a powder keg, no place in the world is immune to disaster.

On another note, Russia successfully launched its first probe to the Moon in almost 50 years. While Russia is at war with Ukraine and the West, this launch to the Moon can be seen as a show of power and a political competition with China and the United States to claim the title of space superpower.

In conclusion, recent news highlights the challenges facing West Africa, Hawaii and Russia in areas such as political stability, the environment and the space race. These events underscore the importance of constructive dialogue, coordinated action and awareness of the climate emergency to address these international challenges
