Reconstruction of the DRC: Jean-Pierre Lihau calls for patience and vigilance

Article on Jean-Pierre Lihau’s visit to Mbuji-Mayi: a call for patience for the reconstruction of the country

Jean-Pierre Lihau, Deputy Prime Minister in charge of the Civil Service, met with activists from the Sacred Union of the Nation in Mbuji-Mayi, in the province of Kasaï-Oriental, to discuss the political situation and the rebuilding the country. In his speech, he spoke of the need to give President Félix Tshisekedi Tshilombo time to carry out the reforms he has started since taking office rather than demanding immediate results.

Jean-Pierre Lihau underlined that the reconstruction of a country takes time, and particularly in the DRC, a country of continental dimensions, which is five times larger than France and 80 times larger than Belgium. He also regretted that the country had been destroyed for more than 30 years, making the task of reconstruction even more difficult.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, things have changed positively since the arrival of Felix Tshisekedi Tshilombo at the head of the country. Efforts are being made to restore the rule of law and fight against the mentalities that have made impunity their mode of operation. Among other things, he recalled the fight against the untouchable and privileged regime as well as investments to strengthen military power.

Jean-Pierre Lihau, who is in Mbuji-Mayi for a three-day mission, also addressed the issue of biometric identification of state agents. This identification would allow better monitoring of salaries and better management of the public service.

It is essential to give Félix Tshisekedi Tshilombo time to rebuild the country, but also to remain vigilant and continue to work on important reforms so that the population can benefit from the fruits of the efforts that are being undertaken.
