On August 2, at a weekly MONUSCO press conference, Bintou Keita, head of the UN mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), expressed her understanding and support for the Congolese communities affected by the illegal occupation of the territory by the rebel group M23, supported by the Rwandan army. She stressed that efforts were underway to achieve a ceasefire and a lasting solution to the M23 crisis.
MONUSCO, for its part, pleaded in favor of pooling efforts in the war in the East, under the leadership of the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC). The mission stands ready to support the Congolese government in security challenges and the protection of civilians.
Bintou Keita also highlighted the worrying situation of more than 100,000 displaced people who depend on the protection of MONUSCO. She thanked the Congolese government for its diplomatic efforts.
It should be recalled that the head of MONUSCO had toured the eastern DRC last July, in order to gather the perspectives of key players on the future of the UN mission.
This statement of support from MONUSCO and its leader to the Congolese population is encouraging in a regional context where the security situation remains precarious. The efforts of the mission and the Congolese authorities to resolve the M23 crisis and ensure the protection of civilians are essential to guarantee peace and stability in the region.
