“Significant deficit of social housing in the DRC: President Tshisekedi launches the necessary reforms”

The President of the Republic Félix Tshisekedi is concerned about the problem of social housing. During the 100th meeting of the Council of Ministers held at the African Union City, he said that the scarcity of housing and the exponential increase in the population constitute a major challenge facing the country.

According to a report by the Ministry of Urban Planning and Habitat, the DRC needs to build nearly 265,000 housing units per year to fill the current deficit of around 4 million units.

To respond to this problem, three public establishments have been set up: the Congolese Real Estate Promotion Agency (ACOPRIM), the National Housing Fund (FONAH) and the Single Window for the issuance of building permits (GUPEC). These reforms aim to improve people’s access to decent and affordable housing, to regulate the real estate sector and to fight against uncontrolled construction.

The Head of State instructed the members of the government concerned to provide positive support for these new structures in order to quickly provide the Congolese population with decent and dignified housing. Facilitators have also been appointed to the head of ACOPRIM and FONAB during recent appointments within public companies.

As the social housing situation is an important issue for the Congolese population, it is essential that the various institutions work together to offer a quick and effective solution. The development of a regulated and prosperous environment will help Congolese families to access decent and quality housing
