The still glaring security crisis in the DRC: A prolonged state of siege and victims in the East

The security situation in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo is still just as precarious. Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) terrorists continue to carry out deadly attacks against the population. In the past week, 10 civilians have been killed and 9 others missing in the village of Tingwe in the Beni-Mbau sector. These attacks took place despite the exploit of the army which killed 4 elements of this rebellion in the Rwenzori sector a week earlier.

The population of Tingwe and Canaan is in disarray. The bodies of the victims are in an advanced state of putrefaction and were buried by a group of young people accompanied by soldiers from the regular army. The local youth council encourages the population to report any suspicious movement of jihadists to the security services. They also ask the military to increase patrols in the surrounding villages where the enemies are circulating.

In this environment of violence, the Congolese government has extended the state of siege for the 49th time in the face of the security crisis in the east of the country. President Tshisekedi, meanwhile, is continuing his state visit to China to strengthen partnerships for the development of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Meanwhile, the Congolese Lay Coordination Committee calls for mobilization against President Tshisekedi and Perse offers 30 motorcycles to strengthen education in the Kasai Province.

At the moment, there are many development and security challenges in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The worrying situation in North Kivu and the continuing challenges of the war against the M23 rebel movement, the humanitarian crisis in North Kivu, and the arrest of Salomon Kalonda Della are just a few examples of a difficult context. Can a new development partner be found in China or elsewhere? What are the consequences of political tensions and calls for mobilization? All these issues deserve special attention to better understand the current situation in the country.
