The Government of the DRC withdraws the approval of Congo Gold for non-compliance with the Mining Code: a strong decision in favor of responsible mining

The Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has just taken an important decision by withdrawing the approval granted to the mining company Congo Gold for the construction of a new gold refinery in Bukavu, capital of the province of South Kivu. This announcement, made by the Minister of Mines of the DRC, Antoinette Samba, is motivated by the non-compliance with certain provisions of the Mining Code by the company.

According to the Minister, Congo Gold has not respected its social obligations, in particular by not producing the list of social responsibilities imposed on it by law. A formal notice was sent to the company in May 2022, giving it six months to comply with its obligations. However, by the deadline, no procedure had been initiated, which led to the decision to withdraw the approval.

Congo Gold Raffinerie (CGR) is a category B processing entity, with a processing plant of almost 1200 m2 capable of processing 200 kg of gold per day and 2 tons per month. The company now has 30 days to file an appeal with the General Secretariat for Mines.

This decision by the Congolese Government shows its determination to enforce the rules and regulations in terms of mining. It is essential to ensure that mining companies operate in a socially responsible manner and adhere to applicable standards.

This also highlights the importance given to the mining industry in the DRC, which plays a crucial role in the country’s economy. The construction of refineries, like the one planned for Bukavu, would make it possible to develop the country’s mining resources and create local jobs. It is therefore essential that mining operations are carried out in a transparent and responsible manner.

With the withdrawal of approval from Congo Gold, the Congolese Government is sending a strong message to mining companies, encouraging them to respect the laws in force and to contribute positively to the social and economic development of the country.

This decision highlights the importance of responsible management of natural resources in the DRC and the country’s desire to promote sustainable mining. Hopefully this sets an example and encourages other companies to act responsibly in their mining operations in the DRC
