Subcontracting in the DRC: an essential lever for national economic development

The importance of subcontracting in the economic development of the Democratic Republic of Congo

Subcontracting is a key sector in a country’s economy. In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), this sector represents a major opportunity for development and economic growth. However, according to a recent report by the Private Sector Subcontracting Regulatory Authority, approximately USD 8 billion still escapes the public treasury.

This worrying situation prompted the Director General of the Authority, Miguel Katemb, to send a report to the Head of State in order to highlight this problem and propose solutions. According to him, this money that escapes the country must remain on Congolese territory to contribute to the national budget and reduce poverty.

One of the main concerns of Miguel Katemb is the low number of Congolese subcontracting companies present in the city of Kinshasa. He stresses the importance of the participation of local businesses to promote economic development and encourage entrepreneurship among Congolese youth.

Raising the awareness of companies in sectors such as telecommunications and breweries on the importance of subcontracting is also a major challenge. Miguel Katemb explains that many companies thought they were not concerned by this subject, but that they were convinced of its positive impact on the national economy.

Subcontracting can become the engine of economic development in the DRC, according to the Director General of the authority. He therefore calls on the main and subcontracting companies to respect this system and thus contribute to the national economy.

It is clear that measures must be taken to improve the situation of subcontracting in the DRC. Raising awareness, coaching and building the capacity of local businesses are areas to be developed. In addition, closer collaboration between different stakeholders, including authorities, is essential to ensure transparency and proper management of funds that are invested in outsourcing.

In conclusion, subcontracting is an important lever for the economic development of the DRC. It is crucial that the funds generated by this sector remain in the country and contribute to the national budget
