The New Congolese Civil Society (NSCC) recently confirmed the killing of at least 12 civilians by the Democratic and Allied Forces (ADF) in Mambasa territory, Ituri. This shocking information once again highlights the atrocities perpetrated by terrorist groups in this region.
According to NSCC Territorial Coordinator, Master John Vuleveryo, the victims were killed in Apesiko, Apatineko and Elake areas in the Babila-Bakwanza chiefdom. The testimonies of the survivors report more than 20 bodies still lying on the ground.
This tragedy comes after a clash between a group of Mai-Mai militiamen known as “Wazalendo” and ADF terrorists near the town of Mayuwano. Unfortunately, this is not the first time that civilians have paid a high price in this part of Ituri, as more than 5 other people were killed by the ADF in June in Mayuwano.
The situation in the Mambasa region underscores the urgency of concerted action to end the violence and protect civilian populations. Congolese civil society, as well as national and international authorities, must work together to dismantle these terrorist groups and ensure the safety of local populations.
It is also essential to support reconciliation and reintegration efforts in the region, in order to give a future perspective to young people who might otherwise be recruited by armed groups.
This tragedy is a reminder of the urgent need to strengthen security measures and promote justice for the victims of terrorist groups in the DRC. It is crucial not to ignore these atrocities and to do everything possible to end impunity and guarantee the protection of civilians.
The NSCC and other civil society organizations will continue to press for the resolution of this crisis and for those responsible for these heinous acts to be brought to justice. The Congolese people deserve to live in peace and security, and it is essential that national and international authorities act quickly to achieve this
