Outbreak of violence in the North-East of the Democratic Republic of Congo: New deadly ambush attributed to ADF rebels in Mapobu-Carriere
The security situation in the North-East of the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to deteriorate with a recent ambush attributed to ADF rebels. The village of Mapobu-Carrière, located in the territory of Beni, was the scene of this act of violence which cost the lives of several people, including a committed member of civil society.
According to the information collected, the ambush occurred when Mandela Muhithe, the second vice-president of the civil society of the Groupement Babumba-Kisiki, was traveling to Eringeti. Unfortunately, he fell into the trap set by the rebels and lost his life in the attack. Mandela Muhithe was a civil society actor very committed to denouncing the atrocities perpetrated by the ADF, which reinforced the shock and sadness felt by this loss.
This new ambush comes as the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) announced last Wednesday the neutralization of three ADF rebels in the territory of Beni. Despite this security operation, the ADF continue to sow terror in the region, thus reinforcing the fears of the population and civil society.
The territory of Beni is already seriously affected by the violence perpetrated by armed groups, in particular the ADF. The triangle of death, comprising the areas of Nzuma-Mavivi, Kinziki-Mbau, Bilimani and Mapobu, is one of the main centers of rebel activity. The reinforced presence of the ADF in this region raises fears of an escalation of violence and a deterioration of the already precarious humanitarian situation.
It is urgent that the Congolese authorities take additional measures to strengthen security in the Beni region and protect the civilian population. Cooperation between the Congolese armed forces and international peacekeeping forces must be strengthened to counter armed groups and restore peace in the region.
In conclusion, this deadly ambush attributed to ADF rebels in Mapobu-Carriere is a sad reminder of the serious security crisis raging in the North-East of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The loss of a committed member of civil society highlights the urgency of finding lasting solutions to end this violence and protect the population
