“The citizen movement LUCHA is sounding the alarm: the democratic space under threat in the province of Kasaï-Central in the DRC”

In a context marked by increasing restrictions of the democratic space in the province of Kasaï-Central in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the citizens’ movement Lutte pour leChange (LUCHA) is sounding the alarm. In a recent statement, LUCHA denounces a series of acts of political intolerance, vandalism, physical attacks, torture, intimidation, arbitrary arrests and even programs inciting hatred that emanate from a group of activists from a clearly identified political party, the UDPS and its allies. This worrying situation calls into question the very foundations of democracy in the region.

Faced with this dark picture, LUCHA vehemently condemns the decline of democracy and the establishment of totalitarian power in the province. She calls on Governor John Kabeya Shikeyi to strictly adhere to democratic standards and urges the Minister of the Interior to transfer the commander of the Congolese national police for his incapacity and possible complicity in these wrongdoings.

LUCHA, determined to defend the establishment of the rule of law, also announces far-reaching actions if these recommendations are not taken into account. It is essential to underline that this call for vigilance follows previous events, notably the beating of activists from LUCHA and the Civil Society of Congo while peacefully demonstrating to demand the start of work on the Kananga- Kalambambuji.

These alarming developments in Kasai-Central province raise concerns about respect for democratic principles and human rights. LUCHA and other civil society organizations play a crucial role in the fight for the defense of these fundamental values and the preservation of democratic space within the region. As committed citizens, it is our responsibility to support their actions and put pressure on the competent authorities to guarantee respect for the rights and freedoms of all.

It is undeniable that the political and social situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is complex and constantly changing. The recent incidents in Kasaï-Central are just one example among many of the challenges facing the country. However, by staying informed and supporting citizen initiatives such as LUCHA, we are helping to advance democracy and human rights in the DRC.

It is therefore essential that the authorities take into account the concerns expressed by LUCHA and act responsibly to put an end to these attacks on democracy. Only strong political will and a sincere commitment to the rule of law will protect the rights of citizens and guarantee a democratic and prosperous future for the province of Kasaï-Central and the whole of the Democratic Republic of the Congo
