Restrictions on democratic space in Kasaï-Central in the DRC: an urgent call for the preservation of democracy

Title: Restrictions of the democratic space in the province of Kasaï-Central: a challenge for democracy in the DRC

Introduction :

In the province of Kasai-Central in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the political situation is currently experiencing significant tensions. The citizens’ movement Struggle for Change (LUCHA) recently denounced a series of acts of political intolerance, vandalism, physical attacks and arbitrary arrests, which restrict the democratic space in the province. In this article, we will take a closer look at these restrictions and highlight LUCHA’s call for respect for democratic norms.

Acts of political intolerance and violence:

Since the arrival of Governor John Kabeya Shikeyi at the head of Kasaï-Central province, LUCHA has observed an upsurge in acts of political intolerance. Activists of a political party, identified as the UDPS and its allies, are accused of being responsible for these acts. These include vandalism, physical assault, torture, intimidation and incitement to hatred.

LUCHA strongly denounces these actions and condemns the decline of democracy in the province. She asks Governor Kabeya to respect democratic standards and put an end to these restrictions of political space. In addition, she asks the Minister of the Interior to transfer the commander of the Congolese national police, Colonel John Mbela, because of his inability to stem this violence.

Large-scale actions to come:

Faced with this worrying situation, LUCHA announces that it will take large-scale actions if its recommendations are not taken into account. It thus wishes to express its determination and its commitment in favor of democracy and the rule of law.

Conclusion :

The restrictions of democratic space in the province of Kasai-Central in the DRC pose a major challenge to democracy in the country. Acts of political intolerance, violence and arbitrary arrests are obstacles to the exercise of fundamental freedoms and citizen participation. It is essential that provincial and national authorities take action to put an end to these human rights violations and to guarantee a genuine democratic space
