The fight against instability in eastern DRC: the Congolese government calls for sanctions against Rwanda and the M23

The Congolese government remains committed to fighting instability in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The final report of the UN experts, published on June 13, clearly demonstrated Rwanda’s support for the armed groups, in particular the M23, which have sown chaos in the region for a year.

The Congolese government therefore reiterates its call for UN sanctions against Rwandan officials and M23 leaders. The government spokesman insisted on the need for “severe and exemplary” sanctions to punish those responsible for crimes committed on Congolese soil. He also stressed the importance of verbal condemnation of outside supporters.

The UN experts’ report provides detailed evidence of Rwanda’s military and logistical support to M23. It also reveals the names of the Rwandan officers involved in these support operations. Despite Rwanda’s denials, the evidence is mounting and UN experts are calling for concrete measures to put an end to this situation.

The Congolese government also welcomed the decision of the UK Court of Appeal, which ruled that Rwanda was not a “safe third country” for sending asylum seekers. This decision confirms the position of the Congolese government that Rwanda systematically violates human rights, both inside and outside the country.

Despite these challenges, the Congolese government remains committed to contributing to the implementation of the Luanda roadmap, which aims to bring peace to eastern DRC. It also calls for greater involvement of the UN Security Council to support these peace efforts.

The situation in eastern DRC remains worrying, but the Congolese government continues to press for those responsible for this instability to be held accountable
