“Mass kidnapping in North Kivu: seven civilians missing, the urgency of action for their release”

Tragedy continues to strike the North Kivu region in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The village of Matungulu, located near the city of Eringeti, was the scene of a mass kidnapping on Thursday July 6, 2023. According to local civil society, seven people, men and women, have been missing since then.

The responsibility for this kidnapping has been attributed to the ADF rebels, whose movements have been reported in the region. These civilians were abducted while they were busy with rural activities, which reflects a sad reality where no place is safe from the security threat.

Kalume Katho, an active member of local civil society, called on the military authorities to do everything possible to obtain the release of these people. He also stressed the importance of public vigilance in the face of a persistent threat.

Sabiti Nziamoja, official delegate of the governor, confirmed the information by specifying that the security services are currently mobilized to find the trace of the civilians reported missing. This situation once again reinforces the urgency of concerted action to ensure the safety of the inhabitants of the region.

The situation in North Kivu remains worrying, with armed groups continuing to sow terror and abduct civilians. This tragedy is a reminder of the need for collective mobilization to put an end to the insecurity that reigns in the region and guarantee the protection of vulnerable populations.

It is essential that the authorities take firm measures to neutralize the rebel groups and restore peace to this battered region. At the same time, it is essential to strengthen security capacities and improve relations with local communities in order to prevent such incidents in the future.

Those abducted in Matungulu desperately await their release. It is our duty to support efforts to find them safe and sound and to work to ensure that such barbaric acts do not happen again
