“Democratic Republic of Congo: political challenges and socio-economic progress in perspective”

The political situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been in turmoil lately. The deputies who are members of the Front Commun pour le Congo (FCC) have decided not to take part in the examination of the draft law on the distribution of seats for the next legislative, provincial, municipal and local elections. FCC elected officials, close to Joseph Kabila, claim that this electoral process is already biased and corrupt with incalculable consequences for the country. They hold the power in place responsible for all the consequences that may ensue.

FCC elected officials demand the establishment of a consensual CENI and a non-subordinate Constitutional Court. They believe that the current process lacks transparency and will lead to chaotic and fraudulent elections in the country. Despite the demands already made, the government passed the draft law on the distribution of seats. This text was declared reliable by the experts recruited by the CENI after the refusal of the OIF.

On an international level, Antony J. Blinken, head of American diplomacy, discussed with Felix Tshisekedi the worrying situation in the east of the country. China and the DRC have also strengthened mutual support in international affairs and defending the international order.

The massive measles vaccination campaign was launched in the Nyangezi area to prevent epidemics. This campaign responds to the health challenges of the DRC. However, the teachers’ strike is causing tensions within the unions and posing challenges for the country.

Progress can be reported regarding the modernization of public finance legislation to improve management and attract investors. Pascaline Zamuda has been appointed Deputy Director General of FONHAB in the DRC, showing the government’s commitment to put in place effective and transparent management of public investments.

On the cultural side, Congolese cinema is in the spotlight with the screening of “La vie est belle” during the European film festival in Kinshasa. The magnificent Tata Raphaël Stadium in Kinshasa is also ready to host the 9th Games of La Francophonie.

Despite these advances in various areas, the Democratic Republic of the Congo still faces significant political, economic and social challenges. Political actors must continue to commit to the reforms necessary to consolidate the rule of law and the country’s development
