“Violence and Instability Persist in the DRC: United States Calls for Urgent Action”

Violence continues to ravage eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as well as the dire humanitarian situation in the region. This was expressed by Secretary Antony J. Blinken during his meeting with President Felix Tshisekedi. The United States has called on Rwanda to end its support for M23. The Secretary of State also highlighted the importance of the Luanda and Nairobi processes in resolving the conflict.

In addition, the secretary reiterated his concern over the use of hate speech and divisive language in the country. He recalled the right of the Congolese people to demonstrate peacefully and the commitment of the United States to free and fair elections in the country.

Internally, the DRC has appointed Pascaline Zamuda deputy director of FONHAB to improve the country’s social housing. However, political tensions remain high, as evidenced by the recent electoral dispute in the Kasai region.

Despite persistent challenges, the Congolese opposition is waking up from its slumber, a momentum that needs to be supported by a structured program. President Félix Tshisekedi in person went to China to discuss a fairer distribution of the benefits of the contract which binds the two countries.

It is crucial that Congolese leaders work together to find a lasting solution to the violence and instability plaguing the country
