The question of the management of migratory flows between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Angola is still of concern. With this in mind, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the High Commissioner for Refugees (HCR) pleaded for the revival of the technical framework for cooperation between these two countries.
The project “Promoting the stabilization of border communities through durable solutions for mixed migratory flows and effective border management between the DRC and Angola” was developed with funding of US$5.1 million. It focuses on the harmonization of standard cooperation and collaboration procedures as well as the common understanding of existing agreements to better manage migratory flows between the DRC and Angola.
Despite its positive results on the prevention of document fraud and the fight against human trafficking, this project still has to face certain challenges, such as the availability of the Angolan authorities for the meetings of the steering committee, the logistical problems in the region of implementation, the occurrence of the state of roads and security as well as the lack of ownership of the project by the beneficiaries.
Guiding actions in favor of the fight against illegal immigration at the borders of the DRC and Angola is an imperative necessity. The solidity of the existing technical cooperation framework would allow better management of migratory flows, more effective management of borders and, above all, would offer more stability to border communities.
Pay more attention to active and continuous communication with all the actors concerned, in order to guarantee a good appropriation of these projects for their success. It is by working in this direction that we can bring peace and development to these border communities.
