DRC: Deadly Floods, Rising Sexual Violence and Economic Stimulation – A Comprehensive State of the Art.

This week’s news in the Democratic Republic of Congo is very dense. First of all, the Kalehe floods caused the death of more than 400 people. For Women’s Solidarity for Peace and Integral Development (SOFEPADI), it is urgent to take lasting measures to prevent these disasters from happening again. The authorities should put in place an effective urbanization plan, sensitize the population and stop providing land titles for flood-prone land.

In addition, according to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), nearly 674 victims of sexual violence were treated in the six sites around Goma in just two weeks. To end this scourge, justice must work, lasting peace must be established and education must play a major role.

Finally, the government passed six credit ratification bills to stimulate the economic and social development of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Humanitarian Fund for Vulnerable Persons has been implemented to provide assistance to displaced persons and victims of sexual violence.

In general, it is important to emphasize that the DRC is facing enormous challenges in many areas, but that it is necessary to take concrete measures to improve the lives of Congolese. Organizations such as SOFEPADI do important work for social cohesion, governance and advocacy
