False alarm on the results of the Rubaya landslide: remain vigilant against false information on social networks.

The landslide that occurred on May 8 in the mining town of Rubaya in the territory of Masisi (North Kivu) was the cause of several false reports relayed on social networks reporting a large number of deceased artisanal diggers. After a fact-finding mission carried out at the scene of the tragedy by a team dispatched by the provincial government of North Kivu, it was revealed that there was only one person dead and three others injured. The official report was communicated by the spokesman of the provincial government, who recalled that this perimeter was closed by decision of the national ministry of mines.

This false alarm grew as the neighboring province of South Kivu recorded several hundred dead and missing following floods in Bushushu and Nyamukubi in Kalehe territory.

We must stress the importance of the fight against deforestation and the need for the population to remain vigilant when it rains in order to prevent this type of disaster. The consequences can be harmful to human life.

The editorial staff of Fatshimëtrie invites its readers to remain vigilant regarding the false information circulating on social networks and to always favor official information.
