The humanitarian crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the worst in the world in recent years. While the humanitarian situation is increasingly critical in this region, the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, Bruno Lemarquis, has called for a large mobilization in favor of the populations who suffer in this part of the country. .
During a two-day mission to Goma, with ambassadors from several countries and heads of agencies of humanitarian organizations, the senior UN official insisted on the urgency of coordinating efforts to respond to the dramatic situation in the province. North Kivu, particularly in the territories of Rutshuru, Nyiragongo, Masisi and Lubero.
The amount of needs has increased exponentially over the past 12 months, with over a million people displaced since the resurgence of M23. The situation is also very worrying in the province of Ituri.
More resources are needed for an even more robust, coordinated and effective humanitarian response. Bruno Lemarquis insists on the pressure that must be exerted on donors at the international level to support this great mobilization.
Currently, the humanitarian response in the DRC is funded at only 50%, which is not enough to cover the growing needs of the populations affected by this crisis. The pressure must be maintained so that the DRC continues to be under the radar and benefits from the same attention as the other countries in crisis.
In these troubled times, when humanitarian action is in danger, it is important for NGOs, national and international organizations, political decision-makers and donors to mobilize in favor of the populations of North Kivu and Ituri. . Everyone must do their part to enable an effective and coordinated humanitarian response to meet the growing needs of displaced populations, victims of violence, armed conflict, food insecurity and disease.
