The complaint for high treason against Félix Tshisekedi: does the EAC threaten the existence of the DRC?

Since the integration of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) into the Community of East African States (EAC), criticism has multiplied. Recently, Michel Okongo, president of the Unity of Values party, filed a complaint with civil action against the President of the Republic, Felix Tshisekedi for high treason. He accuses him of having integrated the DRC into this sub-regional organization, made up in particular of the aggressors and which, according to him, threatens the existence of the country as a free and independent nation.

Indeed, according to article 8 of the EAC treaty, the community has the possibility of dissolving the Congolese parliament in favor of the legislative structures of the EAC. In addition, Article 4 of the treaty allows the community to acquire Congolese land, hold it, manage it and cede it to other countries. Michel Okongo points out that some territories have already been ceded by the M23 rebels to the EAC armed forces. The Congolese consider themselves in national mourning in the face of the East African troops and without news of their compatriots taken hostage by the EAC armies on Congolese soil with the passive complicity of the public authorities.

This complaint is in addition to the criticisms already expressed in recent days by political figures, such as Senator Francine Muyumba who urged the departure of the regional force of the EAC before the arrival of the SADC in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Concern is also growing over the dubious economic ties of the presidential candidates denounced by the Minister of Finance, Jules Alingete.

In this context, the statement of the Secretary General of the United Nations calls for strengthened inter-African cooperation to resolve the crisis in the DRC and in the Great Lakes region. At the same time, the management of the wage bill is at the heart of the concerns to improve governance and public finances in the DRC. Indeed, the health situation is also worrying with an increase in cholera and measles, and a stable Covid-19. The government announces a major renovation of university sites and a new approach for professional education to meet the challenges of national education. Finally, the fight against gold trafficking in the DRC continues with the dismantling of a recently operated network of traffickers.

In this complex political context, the man who worries the mafia networks in the DRC is Jean-Pierre Bemba, candidate for the presidential election. The deadly clashes between communities and political tensions in the DRC also reveal a very worrying situation.
