Restoring peace and stability in North Kivu: a vital imperative

In the troubled North Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, clouds of uncertainty are once again hanging over the country as violent fighting breaks out between the regular army and the M23 rebels. This Saturday morning, residents of the village of Rusayo, in the Nyiragongo territory, witnessed heavy and light weapons fire, signs of intense fighting in progress.

Sources on the ground report that the M23, supported by the Rwandan army, launched coordinated attacks against positions held by local armed groups and the Congolese armed forces in Kanyamahoro, a few kilometers north of the city of Goma. These clashes are rekindling the fears of the civilian population who fear being targeted, already forced to flee in some areas.

Local authorities, represented by the administrator of the territory Malosa Mboma, have called for calm and collaboration with the Congolese armed forces to allow security operations to be conducted effectively. Despite assurances given regarding the protection of civilians, uncertainty remains omnipresent in the face of the spreading violence.

These clashes are part of a broader context of persistent tensions between the M23 and the Congolese authorities. The rebellion, which recently threatened to attack the cities of Goma and Kavumu in response to the FARDC’s retaliation, seems determined to challenge the authority of the State in the region.

Through these dramatic events, the fragility of the security situation in eastern DRC is once again exposed. The local populations, caught between the forces present, are paying a heavy price in this recurring cycle of violence.

In a broader context, these clashes are a reminder of the need for a sustainable political and security response to put an end to the chronic violence that is shaking North Kivu and its inhabitants. The international community, the Congolese authorities and regional actors are called upon to redouble their efforts to ensure peace and stability in this region ravaged by conflict.

In conclusion, it is imperative to prioritize the protection of civilians, the search for peaceful solutions and the fight against impunity to prevent new tragedies and restore the confidence of the populations in the future of this wounded region.
