Fatshimetrie: General Eddy Kapend’s urgent call for the surrender of the Bakata Katanga militiamen

In the troubled regions of Greater Katanga, the climate of insecurity persists due to the violent actions perpetrated by the Bakata Katanga militiamen. Faced with this worrying situation, the commander of the 22nd military region, General Eddy Kapend, launched an unequivocal appeal to these armed groups to lay down their arms and cease their atrocities.

During a symposium organized by the University of Lubumbashi in collaboration with the Provincial Assembly of Haut-Katanga, General Eddy Kapend firmly stressed that the populations have no valid reason to oppose the State and resort to violence. He warned the Bakata Katanga militiamen of the consequences of their actions, recalling in particular the murders of army officers and the atrocities committed against civilians.

The recent atrocities committed by these armed groups, such as assassinations, rapes, looting and extortions, are barbaric acts that undermine peace and security in the region. General Kapend stressed the importance of the population’s support in the fight against these negative forces, stating that operational measures have been taken to neutralize the militiamen and restore security in a sustainable manner.

In parallel, the University of Lubumbashi and the Provincial Assembly of Haut-Katanga initiated a symposium to explore UNILU’s initiatives to resolve social problems in the region. Experts from various fields were invited to discuss crucial themes such as the economy, agro-pastoral, entrepreneurship, defense and security.

In this context of tensions and security challenges, it appears urgent to strengthen cooperation between the authorities, law enforcement and civil society to stem the threat posed by the Bakata Katanga militiamen. Peace and stability in the region are major issues that require concerted and determined action by all stakeholders involved.

In conclusion, General Eddy Kapend’s call for the surrender of the Bakata Katanga militiamen represents a strong signal in favor of security and social cohesion in the Greater Katanga region. It is now up to everyone to contribute to the collective effort to bring peace and serenity to this part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
