Road safety in Butembo: a major challenge to be met

“Road safety remains a major concern in many cities around the world, and the situation is no different in Butembo, North Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo. The city’s National Commission for Road Safety (CNPR) recently released alarming statistics regarding road accidents that occurred in 2024.

According to the interim head of the CNPR/Butembo branch, Muhindo Maliro Samuel, about 300 road accidents were recorded in the past year. These accidents resulted in the death of 88 people and caused serious injuries to 215 others. These figures, although shocking, may not reflect the totality of accidents that occurred, given that some incidents may not have been reported.

The reasons behind these road tragedies are multiple, but two major causes stand out. First, the ignorance of the new highway code by many drivers is pointed out. Lack of knowledge and respect for traffic rules can lead to dangerous behaviors on the road. Then, drunk driving is identified as a significant factor contributing to accidents. A high rate of drivers involved in accidents were under the influence of alcohol, which highlights a serious road safety problem related to alcohol consumption.

It is essential to raise awareness and train drivers to adopt responsible behaviors on the road. The CNPR of Butembo has launched an awareness campaign on road civics to educate road users on the importance of respecting the rules and being careful when driving. It is crucial that every driver understands the importance of complying with the traffic code and not getting behind the wheel while intoxicated.

In addition, it is necessary to invest in improving road infrastructure to ensure safe traffic conditions for all. Road safety does not only depend on the behavior of drivers, but also on the quality of roads and infrastructure designed to ensure the protection of road users.

In conclusion, road safety must remain a top priority for local authorities and citizens. By committing to respecting traffic rules, avoiding driving under the influence of alcohol and promoting a responsible road culture, it is possible to reduce the number of accidents and save lives on the roads of Butembo and beyond.”
