For three weeks, the Bunia-Katoto-Largu section has been the scene of a worrying situation, hindering the movement of people and goods. The incessant attacks by the CODECO militia in the region have forced local authorities to suspend all traffic. This road, vital for supplying several localities in the Djugu territory with essential products, is now paralyzed by a climate of growing insecurity.

The inhabitants of the Djugu region are trapped in violence, faced with recurring cases of murders, kidnappings and looting attributed to CODECO militiamen. The Ladhejo, Gobi and Pimbo groups are particularly affected by this spiral of violence and insecurity. Local civil society is calling on the government to take firm measures to dislodge these militiamen from these areas, where the population feels literally suffocated.

The consequences of this armed occupation are being felt even in the local economy. Access to fields is hampered, compromising the harvests and agricultural activities of the inhabitants. Small businesses are also affected, with the suspension of community markets and the soaring prices of basic necessities such as salt, sugar, vegetable oil and fuel. There is palpable tension among the population, who now say they are landlocked and isolated.

Faced with this alarming situation, calls are increasing for a stronger military presence in the region. The inhabitants are asking for a more muscular intervention by the FARDC to contain the threats from armed groups and restore a climate of security conducive to development. At the same time, MONUSCO is stepping up its patrols to ensure the protection of civilians and try to prevent further escalations of violence.

The crisis affecting the Bunia-Katoto-Largu section reveals the security and humanitarian challenges facing the Djugu region. Between aspirations for development and the destructive ambitions of the militias, the future of this community is in suspense. It is urgent that concrete actions be taken to restore peace and stability, guarantee the safety of residents and allow the resumption of economic activities.
