At the heart of economic and social concerns in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the issue of the high cost of living remains a recurring problem that directly impacts the daily lives of citizens. Recently, a measure aimed at combating the increase in the prices of certain basic necessities was put in place by the government. However, it is important to note that this measure only concerns eight specific products, namely: meat, sugar, powdered milk, chicken, horse mackerel, salted fish, rice and corn.
According to information from the advisor in charge of Economic Control at the Ministry of National Economy, Emanuel Mfiri, these eight products have seen their prices drop at the importer level following an agreement signed with the government. This approach aims to make these foodstuffs more accessible to the population and to mitigate the impact of the high cost of living on Congolese households.
In addition, dialogue has been initiated with retailers to ensure that the price reduction decided at the importer level is effectively reflected on store shelves. The Ministry of Economy is closely monitoring that the measures taken to contain prices are effectively implemented on the ground. It is in this context that the Minister of Economy received the retailers’ association to discuss the implementation of these measures and to ensure that the prices charged are in line with the agreements reached.
The issue of the high cost of living is not only an economic problem, but also a major social issue. Indeed, rising prices directly impact the purchasing power of households, particularly the most vulnerable, and can lead to increased precariousness for certain sectors of the population. This is why the measures taken by the government to control the prices of basic necessities are of crucial importance in ensuring equitable access to these essential goods.
In conclusion, the fight against the high cost of living in the Democratic Republic of Congo requires concrete actions aimed at containing the increase in the prices of basic necessities. The implementation of control measures and dialogue with economic actors makes it possible to ensure that the price reduction decided on is actually reflected on the ground, thus offering a respite to Congolese households faced with the impact of the high cost of living.
