Preventing sexual exploitation in the DRC: engaging local authorities in the fight

Prevention and fight against sexual exploitation in the DRC

Awareness-raising and prevention of sexual exploitation are crucial issues in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The political and administrative authorities of Kwilu were recently made aware of this subject during a session organized by the NGO Communauté des amis de la nature et de la culture (CANACU), with the financial support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

The prevalence of cases of sexual exploitation and abuse in the region is a worrying reality, although often hidden. It is in this context that the coordinator of CANACU, Damien Bungu, stressed the importance of involving local authorities to put an end to these harmful practices. He particularly insisted on the need to establish focal points within state services to combat exploitation, sexual abuse and sexual harassment.

This initiative goes beyond simply raising awareness among local authorities. Indeed, CANACU plans to set up a complaints management mechanism to facilitate the reporting of abuses. In addition, the organization intends to raise awareness among the community as a whole in order to inform and educate on the dangers of sexual exploitation.

This prevention and awareness-raising approach is essential to protect the most vulnerable, particularly women and children, against all forms of exploitation and abuse. By acting proactively and involving the whole of society, it is possible to effectively combat these unacceptable practices.

It is therefore essential that the political and administrative authorities of Kwilu fully commit to this fight and implement concrete measures to prevent and suppress all forms of sexual exploitation. Collaboration between local actors, NGOs and international agencies is necessary to guarantee the protection of the fundamental rights of all people living in the region.

In conclusion, the prevention and fight against sexual exploitation requires collective and coordinated action by all actors involved. Raising awareness, informing and protecting the most vulnerable is essential to building a more just and equitable society for all.
