The winter solstice marks the beginning of cold weather in Egypt

Winter officially began in Egypt on Saturday, marking the beginning of a cold spell that will last approximately 88 days, 23 hours and 39 minutes. Saturday also marked the peak of astronomical winter, with the shortest day of the year lasting only 10 hours while the night stretched for approximately 14 hours.

The winter solstice occurs in the northern hemisphere on December 21 or 22 each year, when the sun reaches its lowest altitude above the horizon at noon. The sun’s rays are steeply inclined in the northern hemisphere and nearly perpendicular in the southern hemisphere, with the exception of the Tropic of Capricorn, an annual astronomical circumstance characterized by the sun’s perpendicular position above the Tropic of Capricorn.

Regarding the weather, the Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) announced that Saturday will be cold in Greater Cairo, Lower Egypt, the North Coast and northern Upper Egypt, moderate in South Sinai and southern Upper Egypt. At night and early in the morning, it will be cold in Greater Cairo and Lower Egypt, very cold in the North Coast, and frost will be possible on crops in northern Upper Egypt, central Sinai and the Western Desert.

Meteorologists predict intermittent light rains in areas of the North Coast and northern Lower Egypt, as well as intermittent active winds on the northwest coasts.

Expected temperatures:

– Cairo: 20°C
– Alexandria: 21°C
– Luxor: 23°C
– Aswan, Sharm el-Sheikh: 24°C
– Hurghada: 25°C

As winter sets in in Egypt, residents can prepare for cooler temperatures and changeable weather. It’s the perfect time to enjoy winter fun while staying warm.
