December 5, 2024 will remain etched in the annals of environmental commitment in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Indeed, on that day, Tenke Fungurume Mining (TFM) joined forces with an entire country to celebrate National Tree Day. The scene took place in the Manomapia district, a symbolic location for this tree planting activity within TFM’s mining concession.
The powerful symbolism of this event was not lost on anyone. This was much more than a simple planting ceremony. It was the realization of a deep commitment to preserving the environment and fighting climate change. TFM thus loudly asserted its social responsibility by providing fertile ground for the emergence of 500 young plants, thus inaugurating a pilot reforestation project.
This initial gesture was only the prelude to a much greater ambition. In the coming months, 5,000 additional trees will be planted on two hectares of land, demonstrating TFM’s unwavering commitment to restoring ecosystems and encouraging biodiversity. This initiative, far from being a one-off action, is part of a sustainable and visionary approach.
The planting ceremony brought together a host of influential figures, including Maître Blaise Zango, legal advisor to the provincial Minister of Mines, Environment and Sustainable Development. Not to mention the notable presence of TFM Deputy General Manager John Woto and CPO Wu Shenggen, as well as managers from the Environment and Community Development Departments, testifying to the vital importance given to this event.
Speeches filled with awareness and environmental urgency resonated strongly during this memorable day. John Woto himself recalled the climate emergency weighing on the world and called on the local population to make a collective commitment to take care of these young shoots, true symbols of renewal in these uncertain times.
Maître Zango’s inspiring words also left their mark, highlighting the vital importance of each tree planted for the survival of the population and the promotion of sustainable development in the DRC. A vision that is both poignant and pragmatic, fueled by a deep conviction in the ability of each person to make a difference, however small.
Freddie Mukalayi, Environment Manager at TFM, added by reaffirming the company’s unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability. For him, the tree embodies an essential player in our ecosystem, a valuable ally in the fight against climate change. This pilot tree planting project is therefore only a first step towards a greener and more respectful future for our planet..
In parallel with this great initiative, TFM offered a batch of 1,500 young plants of various species to the provincial government of Lualaba, demonstrating its generosity and willingness to share its good practices in sustainable development.
In conclusion, National Tree Day was an opportunity for TFM to shine in all its glory as a leader in sustainable mining practices in the DRC. This humble but significant gesture fits perfectly into the company’s overall environmental strategy and confirms its unwavering commitment to ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) principles. A beautiful lesson in hope and responsibility for future generations.
