Jean-Pierre Lacroix’s visit to Bambari: Promoting peace and development in the Central African Republic

The UN Special Representative for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, recently visited Bambari, Central African Republic, under the watchful eye of the international community. This field mission allowed Lacroix to discuss with local authorities and the population the actions carried out by MINUSCA as part of the implementation of its mandate.

His visit to Bambari also included a meeting with the Court of Appeal, built and equipped by MINUSCA, as well as discussions with civil society organizations and the group of women engaged in politics. Lacroix stressed the importance of promoting development, entrepreneurship, private initiatives, human rights, and the participation of women in the political process.

Regarding the security situation, Lacroix said: “The impression is encouraging, positive, despite the persistent challenges. The populations still highlight certain areas of insecurity and call for continued efforts to encourage development and strengthen human rights. Women play a crucial role in the political process, and it is essential to strengthen their participation.”

On 19 December, Lacroix, accompanied by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of MINUSCA, Valentine Rugwabiza, met with the President of the National Assembly, Simplice Mathieu Sarandji, and members of the parliamentary bureau. They discussed the progress made in terms of security, state administration and sustainable stabilization, as well as the upcoming elections next year.

Lacroix highlighted the significant progress noted on the ground while addressing the challenges to be met in strengthening the presence of the State and ensuring a peaceful electoral transition. The relationship between the national representation and the United Nations was praised for its common orientations and the desire to progress together.

In conclusion, Jean-Pierre Lacroix’s visit to Bambari underlines the importance of international cooperation in promoting peace and development in the Central African Republic. Despite persistent challenges, the international community remains committed to supporting the country in its quest for stability and prosperity for all its citizens.
