The evolution and resilience of President Cyril Ramaphosa: leadership in action

Fatshimetrie: The evolution and resilience of President Cyril Ramaphosa

Since the 29 May elections, which saw the ANC lose its majority, President Cyril Ramaphosa has kept his party in power through a Government of National Unity (GNU). Since the end of June, he has overseen a rapid transition to a multi-party government, which he has managed to keep cohesive. Despite criticism that he is a weak president, having spent much of his first term governing by committee and postponing decisions, Ramaphosa has demonstrated impressive skill, determination and decisiveness in the first six months of his second term.

Tensions between the coalition parties are building, but electricity is still available, the economic outlook has improved slightly and a political will to fight corruption finally appears to be emerging. On the international stage, Ramaphosa shines, but he has struggled to take decisive action against his ANC colleagues accused of corruption, as evidenced by his reassignment rather than dismissal of Thembi Simelane.

Cyril Ramaphosa’s image as president is rapidly changing. He may be criticised for his hesitant approach to governance, but he has also demonstrated an ability to adapt to new political realities and maintain stability in a turbulent environment. His ability to find compromises and maintain unity within the government demonstrates significant resilience and flexibility in a country facing multiple challenges.

The future of Ramaphosa’s presidency remains uncertain, but his leadership in times of transition and uncertainty shows that he is prepared to face obstacles with determination and composure. While criticism persists, there is no denying that Cyril Ramaphosa continues to evolve as a political leader, ready to tackle current challenges and shape a better future for South Africa.
