A tragedy struck the Islamic school of Basorun, located in Nigeria, leaving several children dead in a stampede at a funfair. The incident took place near the economic hub of Lagos, Oyo State, leaving local and national authorities in shock. The organizers of the event were apprehended by the security forces, according to the statements of the governor of the state, Seyi Makinde.
In a statement, Governor Makinde expressed his deep sorrow over the tragedy: “Earlier today, an incident occurred at the Islamic school of Basorun, the venue of an event organized for families. Unfortunately, a stampede at the venue resulted in multiple loss of lives and injuries. This is a very sad day.” He also expressed solidarity with the parents whose joy suddenly turned to grief over the deaths.
Nigeria’s National Emergency Services deployed a team to assist the victims. Children injured at the scene were rushed to local hospitals, where parents were asked to check for missing persons.
Video footage from the scene showed a large crowd, mostly children, watching in distress as some were carried away from the field where the event was taking place.
Local media identified the organizers of the event as the Women In Need Of Guidance and Support Foundation, which had organized a similar event for children the previous year. The group was expecting up to 5,000 young people to attend this year’s event, Oyo-based radio station Agidigbo FM reported, citing the organizers who spoke on its program. The children “will win exciting prizes such as scholarships and other bountiful gifts,” they said.
Following the incident, an investigation has been launched to determine the causes of the stampede, according to Governor Makinde, who added that “anyone directly or indirectly involved in this tragedy will be held accountable.”
