Citizen vigilance to protect human rights in the DRC

At the heart of the Democratic Republic of Congo, a complex picture is emerging, intertwining the issues of citizen vigilance, observance of human rights and the fight against violations of these same rights. The NGO Friends of Nelson Mandela for Human Rights has unveiled its ambitious three-year program 2024-2027, focused on strengthening active citizenship and denouncing violations of fundamental rights.

Launched under the evocative banner of “it must stop this time” in the DRC, this campaign resonates as a call to action, an unprecedented mobilization to block any form of transgression against human rights. By deploying its actors on the ground, the NGO is equipping itself with the necessary means to monitor, document and denounce violations, including any potential plans to amend the Constitution.

Concerned by this initiative, the magazine “Fatshimetrie” gives the floor to Aaron Mukalengi, Program Coordinator at ANMDH. In a relevant exchange, he explains the urgent need to strengthen citizen vigilance, to scrupulously document violations and to remain vigilant in the face of attempts to challenge the legal foundations essential to the protection of the fundamental rights of Congolese citizens.

The fundamental question that arises is therefore the following: why is it necessary to redouble efforts to guarantee respect for human rights in the DRC? The answer lies in the fragility of democratic achievements, the precariousness of institutions and the persistence of abuses, all challenges that require constant vigilance and collective mobilization.

By opposing fierce resistance to any desire to modify the Constitution, the NGO affirms its determination to protect the democratic principles on which Congolese society is founded. Faced with the critical issues that are looming, it is imperative to remain united, supportive and committed to defending the universal values of human rights and preserving the integrity of every individual, regardless of their status or origin.

Thus, through its innovative and committed program, Friends of Nelson Mandela for Human Rights breathes a wind of hope and determination into the Congolese citizen landscape. By embracing the cause of fundamental rights and calling for general mobilization, the NGO outlines the contours of a necessary and salutary struggle for a fairer, more equitable DRC resolutely turned towards a future respectful of individualities and freedoms.
