Torrential rains painfully impact Kibambi

The torrential rains that are falling at the end of 2024 on the province of Kongo Central are unfortunately not synonymous with blessings for all. Indeed, what should have been a source of vitality for agriculture and domestic needs sometimes turns into an unexpected tragedy for some residents. This is the case recently in Kibambi, Fuma Kibambi sector in the territory of Madimba, where a terrible event hit the community hard.

During a storm accompanied by strong winds, Ignace Nkuku Mbala, head of the Kivuka Institute, a Catholic school in the diocese of Kisantu, was fatally struck by lightning. This incident unfortunately echoes a similar tragedy that occurred three years ago in another school in the region, where four teachers lost their lives in similar circumstances. These dramatic events raise critical questions about the safety of students and education staff during periods of heavy rainfall.

The safety of children at school is a critical issue, especially during extreme weather events such as torrential rains and storms. The decision to release students during bad weather can be delicate, as it can jeopardize valuable learning time lost due to various circumstances such as teacher strikes. But at the same time, keeping students in class during hazardous weather conditions exposes them to potential risks, including lightning or building collapses.

Education authorities and school leaders must seriously consider these risks to ensure the safety of students and education staff. Specific safety protocols must be put in place to deal with severe weather conditions and allow for quick and safe evacuations when necessary. It is also important to raise awareness among the education community about the potential dangers associated with extreme weather conditions and work on effective preventative measures.

In conclusion, the recent tragedies in Kibambi highlight the critical importance of ensuring the safety of children and education personnel during periods of intense rains. It is imperative that adequate measures are taken to prevent such incidents in the future and to ensure a safe and protective educational environment for all.
