The much-anticipated annual event, the Lagos Dog Carnival, once again brought together dog lovers from all parts of the country for a day of celebration and festivities. This sixth edition saw a flurry of extravagant costumes and disguises sported by our canine friends of all breeds and sizes.
Spectators were treated to a colourful parade as dogs strutted down the red carpet in a variety of costumes, wings and accessories, each more unique than the last. Some owners even queued up to have their four-legged friends blessed and sprayed with holy water by the Catholic priest, Reverend Father Michael Chike-Osamor.
The blessing of animals may seem surprising to some, but for Father Michael Chike-Osamor, it embodies the recognition of the place of animals in God’s creation and in our lives. Animals are our faithful companions, they bring us warmth and divine presence, hence the importance of celebrating them and offering them blessings.
Aside from the parades and blessings, the carnival is also an opportunity for dog owners to come together, socialize and strengthen their bonds. According to Blessing Chukwuma, these regular get-togethers are essential in strengthening the dog-loving community and fostering a sense of belonging.
This year’s theme, “Angels on Four Legs,” inspired many participants to don angel wings in honor of the carnival’s theme. Carnival organizer Jackie Idimogu is proud to bring dog owners together each year to thank them for their dedication to their faithful companions.
Despite a slight decrease in participation compared to previous editions, Jackie Idimogu is happy to see the dog-loving community growing and the growing awareness about the treatment of animals. Her goal is to have Nigeria recognized as a dog and pet friendly country.
Through this event, Jackie Idimogu wants to highlight the love and devotion Africans have for their pets and show that dogs are precious and cherished in Africa. She hopes that the world will recognize the importance given to animals in Nigeria and Africa, and that the African continent will be celebrated for its love and compassion for animals.
Ultimately, the Lagos Dog Carnival is more than just a dog dress-up event. It is a celebration of the love and special bond between humans and animals, an opportunity to recognize and appreciate the precious presence of our four-legged companions in our lives.
