Libyan Experts Gathered by the United Nations to Relaunch National Elections

Fatshimetrie is excited to report on the latest efforts by the United Nations to revive the long-awaited national elections in Libya. In a renewed initiative, the UN is bringing together a panel of Libyan experts to tackle the contentious issues surrounding the electoral laws in the country.

Stephanie Koury, the acting head of the UN mission in Libya (UNSMIL), announced that the experts’ main task will be to develop solutions to the ongoing disagreements over the electoral laws. This crucial step aims to pave the way for the resumption of the democratic process in Libya and to move past the obstacles that have hindered progress so far.

The national elections, initially scheduled for December 2021, had to be postponed due to disputes over the eligibility of key candidates. The failure to reach a consensus on this issue has significantly delayed the UN-backed political process designed to end the long-standing conflict in the region.

In a noteworthy development, the Libyan parliament based in Tobruk recently voted to terminate the term of Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh’s government, which operates out of Tripoli. This decision underscores the deep-seated divisions in the country, with rival administrations in the east and west vying for power.

The significance of holding national elections cannot be overstated. By establishing a unified government, military, and state institutions, Libya can begin to build a stable and democratic future for its citizens. The upcoming meeting of experts convened by the UN represents a crucial opportunity to chart a path forward towards reconciliation and national unity.

As the international community closely watches these developments, the hope remains that the Libyan people will soon have the chance to determine their country’s political future through free and fair elections. Fatshimetrie will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates on this important story as it unfolds.
