The Energy Transition in Egypt: Towards a Sustainable and Resilient Future

New renewable energy sources are making headway in Egypt, paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient energy future. At the inauguration ceremony of the Abydos 1 solar power plant in the Kom Ombo desert, Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced that the government has secured electricity supplies for next summer through a collaboration between the Ministries of Electricity and Oil.

This visionary approach aims to shift to new energy sources to avoid the need for power outages, thus prioritizing clean and sustainable energy. The plan includes the increased use of new and renewable energy, including the establishment of projects currently underway with the private sector to be operational by next summer.

This transition to renewable energy is part of a comprehensive plan to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, improve energy efficiency, and minimize imports of petroleum products. At the same time, measures were taken to ensure the stability of the national electricity grid, eliminate the risk of power outages and guarantee a continuous supply of electricity.

During his speech, the Prime Minister stressed the Egyptian government’s commitment to investing in renewable energy to secure electricity supply by the summer of 2025. Joint efforts with the Ministry of Oil have helped to bridge the gap estimated at 3,000 to 4,000 megawatts, requiring a significant investment of nearly four billion dollars for new energy projects.

On the sidelines of the ceremony, two agreements were signed for the implementation of a 500 megawatt wind turbine project in the Gulf of Suez, representing an investment of approximately 600 million dollars. These initiatives mark a significant step towards the energy transition in Egypt, demonstrating the country’s commitment to promoting clean energy and ensuring a stable and sustainable energy supply for years to come.
