Poultry farmers in Oyo State face economic challenges during Christmas season

Poultry farmers in Oyo State are currently facing a worrying situation: the potential decline in chicken sales during the upcoming Christmas season. This was disclosed by the Chairman of the Oyo State Livestock and Poultry Farmers Union (LPFU), Josiah Adebola, during a recent chat with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan.

Adebola’s fears of a possible decline in poultry sales during the Christmas festivities are linked to the rising cost of poultry feed, medicines and other items related to the poultry sector. He noted that the rising cost will inevitably impact on the price of chicken, which could impact its demand in the market.

The chairman of the poultry farmers described the situation as worrying for the livestock sector. He explained that many farmers have been forced to suspend their operations due to the rising cost of production. Those who continue to operate are facing financial difficulties and are seeking to recoup the funds invested in their farms.

Despite the economic hardships faced by many Nigerians, Adebola anticipates a rise in chicken prices, which could push consumers to import frozen chicken, regardless of the potential health consequences.

However, the association chairman appealed to charities, churches and philanthropists willing to donate chicken to the underprivileged in society, encouraging them to support local poultry farmers.

The challenges facing poultry farmers in Oyo State underscore the broader issues facing the agricultural sector in Nigeria. It is imperative for the relevant authorities to take measures to support local farmers and ensure the sustainability of national food production. This situation highlights the need for a solid agricultural policy and support measures for local producers to guarantee the country’s food security.
