The festivities marking World HIV/AIDS Day were launched this Saturday, December 14, 2024 in Butembo, a dynamic city located in North Kivu, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This event of capital importance took place in the prestigious hall of the city hall, in the presence of many participants and actors engaged in the fight against this disease.

Under the leadership of Bwambale Nyime Gilbert, head of office at the town hall and representative of the urban authority, the assembly was invited to fully support the national strategy for the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS. During his speech, he stressed the urgency of collective mobilization in favor of the most vulnerable and marginalized populations, as well as those already affected by the virus. Focusing on children, men with risky sexual practices, drug users, sex workers, prisoners and their partners appears imperative to effectively counter this pandemic.

People living with HIV/AIDS had the opportunity to share their experiences during this emotional ceremony. A couple, diagnosed in 2012, spoke about their daily lives punctuated by taking antiretrovirals and their gratitude to dedicated health professionals. The couple highlighted the importance of associations of people living with HIV in providing essential support and valuable advice for a fulfilling life despite the disease.

Dr. Nicaise Mathe, coordinator of the National AIDS Control Program (PNLS) in the Far North of the province, provided alarming data on the prevalence of HIV in the region. With over 12,600 people living with HIV, a significant percentage of whom reside in urban areas such as Butembo, Beni and Katwa, concrete and coordinated action is urgently needed.

This initiative, led by the PNLS in collaboration with partner organizations such as Femmes Engagées pour la Promotion Intégrale (FEPSI), demonstrates the importance of a community approach in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Awareness-raising, prevention and support activities are planned throughout the month, highlighting the commitment and determination of local and international actors against this devastating disease.

Although World HIV/AIDS Day is usually celebrated on December 1, the postponement of the event in Butembo on December 14 allowed for broader and more effective mobilization. This year’s international theme, “Following the Path of Rights,” highlights the importance of human rights in the fight against HIV/AIDS, while the national theme, “Human Rights at the Center and Communities at the Lead,” encourages collective and united action..

In conclusion, the Butembo event marks the beginning of a series of actions and reflections aimed at raising awareness and mobilizing the local population against HIV/AIDS. The commitment of authorities, health professionals, associations and citizens is crucial to change the course of the pandemic and offer a better future to people living with HIV. By joining forces and promoting solidarity, we can defeat this disease together and build a more inclusive and caring world for all.
