Relaunch of the Kipushi zinc mine: A major turning point for the mining industry in the DRC

“In the heart of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the revival of the Kipushi zinc mine by Kipushi Corporation (KICO) is shaping up to be a major turning point for the country’s mining industry. Featured prominently in President Félix Tshisekedi’s State of the Nation address, this ambitious initiative represents much more than just a mining project.”

“With a colossal investment of $923 million, this strategic undertaking aims to elevate the DRC to the rank of key global players in the zinc sector. Nestled in the Haut-Katanga province, the Kipushi mine is now the largest zinc mine in Africa, boasting a level of modernity that places it among the most avant-garde on an international scale. With a monthly production of around 45,000 tonnes of zinc concentrates, its annual production estimated at 540,000 tonnes is a testament to technological prowess and cutting-edge operating methods.”

“The benefits of this project are not only economic but also social, since in addition to contributing significantly to the national economy, the mine has already created more than 900 direct jobs, representing an annual payroll of nearly $48 million. At the same time, local zinc processing projects are underway, aimed at further enhancing the value of the extracted resources and offering new opportunities to neighboring communities.”

“Supported by the joint venture between Ivanhoe Mines and Gécamines, KICO is committed to modernizing infrastructure to ensure efficient and sustainable underground and surface mining. The mining techniques adopted, such as the longitudinal stop sublevel and cemented rock filling, illustrate an innovative and environmentally friendly approach.”

“With an average production forecast of 278,000 tonnes per year over the first five years, the Kipushi mine is strategically positioned to compete with the largest zinc mines worldwide. Commercial agreements with international partners such as CITIC Metal Group and Trafigura ensure an outlet for the zinc concentrate produced, consolidating its place on the international market.”

“This revival of the Kipushi zinc mine goes beyond the simple mining aspect. It promises to boost the development of local infrastructure and improve the living conditions of the surrounding populations. Supported by the Congolese Government, this initiative is part of a vision of sustainable and equitable development, guaranteeing a promising future for the DRC and its inhabitants..”

“The revitalization of the Kipushi zinc mine by KICO thus opens a new chapter in the economic and social history of the Democratic Republic of Congo, propelling the country onto the international scene as a key player in the mining sector, but also as a model of sustainable and responsible development.”
