The Congolese Liberation Movement (MLC) recently spoke out following statements by Bishop Donatien Nshole, Secretary General of CENCO, regarding Jean-Pierre Bemba’s speech. Fidèle Babala Wandu, Secretary General of the MLC, reacted strongly to these remarks, which he described as unfounded attacks, and defended Jean-Pierre Bemba’s political commitment and actions.
The official statement issued by the MLC highlights a perception that Bishop Nshole is adopting a political position that is incompatible with the role of the Church. According to Babala, Bishop Nshole’s statements, broadcast on Radio Top Congo, lack balance and generate divisions rather than unity.
The MLC stressed that Jean-Pierre Bemba’s criticism of “politicians in robes” echoed the recommendations of the Holy Father, Pope Francis, reminding members of the clergy of their primary mission which is to transmit the Gospel rather than engage in politics. Babala questioned why Bishop Nshole felt targeted when President Bemba did not explicitly mention anyone.
Furthermore, the MLC defended Jean-Pierre Bemba’s legitimate right to question the use of public funds allocated to dioceses by the government. According to Babala, it is legitimate to demand accountability for the management of these funds, just as ecclesiastical authorities demand transparency from those in power. He added that priests should also be accountable for the use of these financial resources.
On the issue of constitutional revision or change, the MLC criticized Bishop Nshole’s statements as contradictory. Babala highlighted the fact that Bishop Nshole opposes any constitutional revision while informing that CENCO has set up a commission of experts to look into this issue, thus anticipating presidential initiatives.
The movement also highlighted the achievements of Jean-Pierre Bemba in his home region, Sud-Ubangi, particularly in the areas of agriculture, health, infrastructure and electrification, in response to the criticisms made by Bishop Nshole.
In conclusion, the MLC urged Bishop Nshole to respect the prophetic mission of the Church and avoid interfering in political discussions. The statement stressed that since the Democratic Republic of Congo is a secular state, it would be inappropriate for members of the clergy to impose their views on political issues.
In summary, the MLC statement highlights divergent views between the Church and the political movement, stressing the importance of respecting each other’s missions and preserving the independence of each institution.
