Miguel Cardoso’s arrival at Mamelodi Sundowns: A new chapter begins

Fatshimetrie, the revelation of the moment in the world of African and international football, welcomes Miguel Cardoso as their new coach. With a wealth of experience across Europe, Cardoso arrives at South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns with a wealth of experience.

The Portuguese coach has already left his mark by leading Tunisian club Esperance to the final of the African Champions League last season. His arrival at the Downs comes after the departure of Manqoba Mngqithi, which was announced earlier in the week.

Aged 52, Miguel Cardoso has coached renowned clubs such as Rio Ave in Portugal, Nantes in France, Celta Vigo in the Spanish La Liga, and AEK Athens in Greece. Despite his performance with Esperance, his termination of contract last October was explained by a difficult start to the season.

The sacking of Manqoba Mngqithi marks the second coaching change in just six months for Mamelodi Sundowns, owned by the family of CAF president Patrice Motsepe. It follows a string of poor results, including Champions League draws and a South African League Cup defeat.

Last July, Mngqithi replaced Rulani Mokwena, who led Downs to the league title with a record 23 points. A series of changes at the helm of the club has raised questions about the stability of the team.

Mamelodi Sundowns, who will represent Africa at the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, are in Group F alongside Borussia Dortmund, Brazilian champions Fluminense and Korean side Ulsan Hyundai.

The arrival of Miguel Cardoso marks a new chapter for Sundowns as they aim to strengthen their position on the domestic and international stage. His vast expertise and innovative tactical approach could well be the key to success for the South African club in the coming months.
