Crucial renewal of MONUSCO mandate for peace in the DRC

The renewal of the mandate of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) is one of the crucial points of current international news. During the 9804th meeting of the Security Council, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, underlined the expectations of the Democratic Republic of the Congo regarding this renewal.

The Minister called on the Council to provide MONUSCO with the necessary resources to carry out its mandate, with an emphasis on the protection of civilians, DDR and Security Sector Reform. She also condemned the violations of the sovereignty of the DRC by Rwanda, calling for measures to remedy them. The regional aspect of the conflict was also highlighted for a better response to cross-border threats.

The proposed disengagement plan for MONUSCO, adapted to local realities, aims to strengthen coordination with the Congolese armed forces and regional mechanisms to ensure sustainable protection of civilians. It is important to ensure rigorous monitoring and accountability in the transition process, including by involving the United Nations.

The Security Council previously renewed MONUSCO’s mandate until December 2024 by endorsing a phased drawdown plan. It was decided that the Mission’s strength will be reduced gradually, with a reduction in military and police personnel starting in July 2024.

Thus, the renewal of MONUSCO’s mandate offers a crucial opportunity to adapt the Mission’s actions to current realities while consolidating the progress made. The recognition of the international dimensions of the conflict and a coordinated transition will allow MONUSCO to leave a lasting legacy of peace and security in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In conclusion, the recent intervention by the Minister of Foreign Affairs highlights the importance of a coordinated and tailored approach to ensuring stability in the region. The renewal of MONUSCO’s mandate represents an essential step towards ensuring peace and security in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
