Urgency to renovate the National Library of Congo: a call to action to preserve its cultural heritage

The National Library of Congo, an essential cultural and educational jewel, is unfortunately plunged into a worrying state of disrepair. During a recent visit, the national deputy stressed the urgency of intervening to safeguard this institution, which is crucial in preserving national memory. He advocated for increased support for its modernization, highlighting the importance of the library for the cultural and economic development of the country. The revitalization of this cultural space is an absolute priority to guarantee access to culture and education in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

During the visit of the national deputy Léonard She Okitundu in the company of the French ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rémy Maréchaux, the poignant reality of this essential institution was highlighted.

In the heart of the Congolese capital, the National Library of Congo is in a worrying state of disrepair. The images of dilapidated furniture, poorly stored archives and obsolete installations testify to a negligence that compromises its crucial role in the preservation of national memory.

Faced with this sad observation, Léonard She Okitundu expressed his indignation at the absence of a national library that lives up to the cultural and educational heritage of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This situation jeopardizes access to culture and education, an essential pillar of a country’s development.

In advocating for increased support for the modernization of the National Library of Congo, the MP highlighted the importance of this institution for the cultural and economic advancement of the country. He also recalled the DRC’s essential role within the International Organization of La Francophonie, as the first French-speaking country, and called on France to support this renovation project.
