The case of the suspension of the Director General of Minière de Bakuanga (MIBA), André Kabanda, is currently causing a stir within the mining company and attracting the interest of economic observers in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This decision, taken by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of MIBA, has shed a harsh light on the internal tensions and dysfunctions within the mining company based in Mbuji-Mayi, in the province of Kasaï-Oriental.
The reasons for this suspension are multiple and highlight management and governance issues within the company. Indeed, among the accusations against him, we find the refusal to transmit the management report to the Board of Directors. This opacity in the communication of key information on the financial and operational health of MIBA raises questions about the transparency and accountability of the company’s management.
In addition, the failure to implement the recommendations and resolutions of the Board of Directors for the revival of MIBA is another problematic element raised in this case. This situation suggests internal tensions and difficulties in implementing strategic decisions taken within the mining company.
The obstruction of control and investigation missions, as well as the cessation of mining production, are also facts attributed to André Kabanda. These elements highlight operational and governance problems that directly impact MIBA’s activity and jeopardize its long-term economic viability.
Faced with these accusations, the Minister of Portfolio, Jean-Lucien Busa, spoke out, asking the accused for explanations and emphasizing the importance for the latter to respond clearly and transparently to the grievances attributed to him. This approach aims to clarify the situation and make informed decisions regarding the future of MIBA and its governance.
Finally, the Minister of Portfolio also requested information on mission reports from various economic stakeholders, including SIBEKA in Brussels, ASA RESSOURCE GROUP PLC in Johannesburg, London and Clayton-le-Moote. These requests for information aim to shed light on MIBA’s relations with its partners and shareholders, and to clarify the situation regarding the company’s shareholding.
Pending the requested clarifications and the conclusions of the ongoing investigations, the case of the suspension of André Kabanda reveals the major governance and transparency issues facing companies in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This situation highlights the need for rigorous, transparent and responsible management within the country’s mining companies to ensure their sustainability and contribute to the nation’s economic and social development.
