Kinshasa, the bustling capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has been facing a recurring problem for some time: traffic jams. These have reached such a level of magnitude that the population of Kinshasa is heavily impacted on a daily basis. Faced with this alarming situation, the government has had to take drastic measures to try to relieve road traffic congestion and improve citizens’ mobility.
Following multiple complaints from residents, the government has implemented initiatives such as alternating traffic and the establishment of one-way streets on certain roads. However, instead of solving the problem, these measures seem to have had a negative impact by causing even greater traffic jams and leading to an increase in transport fares.
Faced with this situation, the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of the Interior, Security, Decentralization and Customary Affairs, Jacquemain Shabani, has called an evaluation meeting for Monday, December 9, 2024. This will bring together the main stakeholders involved in road traffic management in order to propose alternative solutions to resolve this endemic problem.
During the 24th meeting of the Council of Ministers, Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka had already stressed the urgency of evaluating the effectiveness of the measures in place to allow residents to enjoy the end-of-year festivities with peace of mind. President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi had insisted on the importance of respecting these measures while calling for an improvement in road decongestion strategies.
Kinshasa residents and drivers express their dissatisfaction and skepticism about the effectiveness of the current measures. The National Road Safety Commission and the various authorities must therefore find innovative solutions to smooth traffic flow and improve the quality of life of the people of Kinshasa.
In conclusion, the fight against traffic jams in Kinshasa remains a major challenge for local authorities. It is imperative to rethink current strategies and adopt more effective measures to ensure smooth and safe traffic flow in the Congolese capital. Only a concerted approach and strong political will will make it possible to meet this challenge and improve the mobility of Kinshasa’s citizens.
