Empty influence: the cult of frivolity on social networks in the DR Congo

In a world where social networks have become the new playground of “influencers”, a phenomenon is emerging with worrying force: the emptiness of the models promoted. In the DR Congo, this phenomenon is taking on alarming proportions, exacerbating the challenges of a society grappling with crucial socio-economic issues.

Contemporary “influencers”, caught in a narcissistic spiral where the quantity of likes outweighs the quality of the content, seem to have deviated from their primary vocation. Instead of offering constructive and inspiring reflections, many are engaged in seductive strategies, focused on sensationalism rather than substance.

The attribution of honorary titles to these figures of emptiness questions the criteria of recognition and admiration of our society. How did we come to celebrate individuals whose main contribution seems to be limited to media overexposure based on frivolity and superficiality? What image are we sending to our youth by erecting such models?

Congolese youth, eager for positive reference points and models, find themselves disoriented in the face of this glorification of insignificance. Likes and shares taking precedence over the intrinsic value of ideas and actions, it is a generation in need of authentic reference points that is being built, imprisoned in a logic where appearance prevails over essence.

It is imperative to rethink our conception of influence and social models. Rather than glorifying triviality and media noise, why not highlight those who, through their commitment, creativity and intellect, truly contribute to collective elevation? These are the voices and actions that should be held up as examples, in order to nurture a stronger, more enlightened and more resilient society.

The Congolese authorities have a crucial role to play in this process. By highlighting authentic leaders who can elevate the debate, catalyze progress and inspire future generations, they will help shape a better future for the country. It is time to reverse the trend and choose influencers who influence positively, who provoke reflection and who build bridges to a bright future.

Ultimately, stupidity must not become the legacy of a nation in search of meaning and progressivism. By opting for values and figures that carry meaning and elevation, we give our youth the keys to build themselves in dignity, integrity and resilience. The time has come to turn the page on insignificance and embrace an ideal of greatness and nobility.
