An undeniably memorable derby, dubbed the “Malebo pool derby”, which saw the Congolese women impose their pace and determination throughout the match.
The event, which took place at the Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa, saw player Vera Ngonga Kiala shine brightly, literally carrying her team to victory. Leading with a narrow score of 16-15 at halftime, the Leopards maintained their lead in the second half, thus concluding their participation on a note of pride and accomplishment.
Despite the disappointment of not having achieved their primary objective of qualifying for the World Championships, the Congolese players are holding their heads high. Melissa Agathe, one of the team’s key players, stresses the importance of staying motivated and looking to the future: “We faced formidable opponents during this competition, with four matches in as many days, it was a real challenge. Although we did not achieve our objectives, we remained committed until the end. Now, we must look forward, think about the next CAN in two years, and hope to qualify for the World Cup in three years.”
The team’s iconic captain, Christianne Mwasesa, also played a leading role in this victory, thus signing a glorious end to her career in the spotlight. This African Nations Championship, held for the first time in the DR Congo, was an unforgettable experience for the Leopards Women, allowing them to compete against the continental elite on their own soil. The unwavering support of the Kinshasa public was a catalyst for motivation, providing the players with an electrifying environment to express their passion and talent.
Despite the challenges encountered and the unachieved objectives, the courageous performance of the Leopards Women made an impression and brought together a solid and loyal fanbase, bringing a breath of fresh air and popularity to this rapidly expanding sport.
The marathon competition, the accumulated fatigue, the formidable opponents encountered, all this forged a solid team, ready to project itself into the future with confidence and determination. A deserved 5th place that stands as a springboard for future generations of Congolese handball players, under the watchful eyes of their coach Clément Machy who will be able to learn the necessary lessons to continue to progress and shine on the continental and international scene.
