Historic meeting between the Senate of the DRC and the Subcommittee for the Prevention of Torture


On 5 December, in Kinshasa, an important meeting took place between the President of the Senate, Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, and a delegation from the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture and Other Cruel Treatment or Punishment. This meeting, marked by seriousness and importance, was an opportunity for Hamet Saloum Diakhate, at the head of this delegation, to present the role and actions of the SPT in the fight against torture and ill-treatment.

The Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture and Other Cruel Treatment or Punishment is of great importance as a United Nations mechanism designed to prevent acts of torture and ill-treatment. Since the beginning of its activities in February 2007, the SPT has been actively engaged in the promotion and protection of human rights worldwide.

As part of its mission, the delegation expressed its willingness to support the Democratic Republic of Congo in establishing a mechanism for monitoring and preventing torture, with a view to strengthening the existing legal framework. This approach is crucial to ensuring respect for the fundamental rights of individuals and combating inhuman and degrading practices.

The exchange between the President of the Senate and the SPT delegation demonstrates the shared desire to promote democratic values ​​and human rights in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
